Some 4,5 million alpacas live in the highlands of Peru. That represents about 80% of the world's alpaca population. There are two varieties of alpacas: The more common is the Huacaya (90% of total population). With its soft, wooly look it can easily be differentiated from the Suri, whose fiber is silky and wavy. Today, as in the past, alpacas are providing income for thousands of Andean families.
Our “Black Alpaca” program seeks to promote the raising of pure black alpacas. Its population today represents less than 1% of the total number of alpacas in Peru. This sustainable project is being developed at Pacomarca, a scientific experimental station dedicated to the genetic improvement of alpaca. Important scientific research is carried out, working together with the alpaca breeders in order to obtain a black alpaca fiber that is unique in its intense color and outstanding softness.
It was considered once a gift from the gods and the most important relic of the history of the Incas.
Today, a world concerned about the environment and its sustainability has the opportunity to know and understand the importance of the alpacas and their fiber.
